Omer Elahi Shaikh represents the new generation of leadership at Nagina Group, blending the enduring values of a respected family legacy with a progressive vision for the future. Educated at Bentley University, USA, he is leading the group's expanding real estate division while remaining deeply committed to the principles established by previous generations. In this exclusive interview, he shares his perspectives on family business, leadership, teamwork, delegation, personal growth, and the importance of creating a lasting impact both in business and in life.
Q1: You represent the successful generation of the Ellahi family, educated at Bentley University, USA and leading major corporate projects. How do you balance respecting the traditional values of the Nagina Group, laid down by your forefathers, with your modern and dynamic approach to business?
Omer: Every day is an opportunity to learn and grow. The advice of our elders is rooted in their experience, shaped by the lessons and challenges they have faced throughout their lives. What might take me hours to figure out on my own, they can often explain with clarity in just five minutes.
Q2: So, when there is a difference of opinion between your modern approach and the family's traditions, does that initial friction eventually convert into consent once you understand the underlying grounds and calculations?
Omer: Yes. We feel that difference of opinion helps you to look at issues through different perspectives and make a more informed decision.
Q3: Who are the key figures you consult with when making these critical decisions that balance modern strategies with family traditions?
Omer: We are four cousins now working in the family business. We have a structure that we discuss all proposals between us before proposing anything to the senior management.
Q4: In family businesses across Pakistan, we often see a distinct family leader and a business leader. Which of these roles do you play within your family?
Omer: I see myself as someone who is growing into both roles. Within the family, I value maintaining strong relationships, listening to different perspectives, and contributing to important discussions. In the business, I focus on execution, learning, and making decisions that support long-term growth. While I continue to learn from the senior generation, I also take ownership of my responsibilities and strive to lead by example.
Q5: Many admire how seamlessly you balance the traditional textile business with modern real estate ventures, though you have mentioned your core focus is on real estate. What personal strengths and qualities have helped you excel in this role?
Omer: When I first entered the business, one of my biggest mistakes was trying to do everything myself. From quantity surveying and meeting with architects to coordinating with the Lahore Development Authority (LDA) and overseeing construction, I wanted to stay involved in every aspect of the project. While this gave me valuable hands-on experience, it was also incredibly demanding. I was working almost around the clock, leaving very little time for anything outside of work.
As I gained experience, I realized that sustainable growth depends on delegation and trust. You cannot scale a business by trying to manage every detail yourself. However, effective delegation starts with hiring the right people.
Today, I place a strong emphasis on recruiting exceptional talent, building a high-performing internal team, and partnering with experienced external specialists. Having the right people around you not only improves the quality of your work but also allows you to focus on leading the business and driving its long-term growth.
Q6: Outside the boardroom, what are the hobbies, sports, or personal activities that bring you joy and help you maintain a healthy work-life balance?
Omer: I have always believed that success is most meaningful when it is shared with the people closest to you. Whether it's our immediate family, our extended family, or the lifelong friendships that have become family, I deeply value the relationships that provide love, support, and perspective. The joy found in shared laughter, meaningful conversations, and time spent together is something I never take for granted.
Sport has also played a defining role in my life. Having competed in polo, volleyball, and football, I developed an appreciation for discipline, resilience, and teamwork—qualities that continue to shape my approach to both business and life. Today, I still enjoy staying active and maintaining a healthy lifestyle through regular exercise.
Q7: What brings you the greatest happiness or a sense of fulfillment outside the business world?
Omer: It is knowing that you are making a positive contribution to someone else's life.
Q8: Would you describe yourself as an introvert or an extrovert?
Omer: I feel I fall in the middle of the spectrum- an ambivert.
Q9: If you had to describe your personality in a few words, what traits would you highlight?
Omer: I would say I am disciplined, approachable, and resilient.
Q10: You play football, volleyball and polo. How have these athletic pursuits shaped your business leadership style?
Omer: Each sport has taught me something different, and together they have shaped the way I lead.
Sports have reinforced the importance of teamwork and communication. No matter how talented an individual may be, success depends on people working towards a common objective, trusting one another, and understanding their roles.
Q11: How are you applying these lessons to leave your own mark on the Nagina Group?
Omer: The aim is to build a reputable real estate development division within Nagina Group. In that regard, we have already delivered 19Q Residences, a high end boutique apartment building in Gulberg, Lahore and are now planning to launch another building soon. I
